Matthew Cookson Interview.

Here is finally the Interview of Matthew Cookson , enjoy :

Your Background?
English From England.

How came to you this vocation ?
I brought the brand Shipton et Heneage to Paris in 1992, also co-founded John Preston English clothier in Paris in same year.

What advice would you for someone who's cultivating his own style ?
Follow your instincts, do not slavishly wear the same brand all the time.

What is your favorite place /location ?
difficult to say between Portofino, Verbier or Exmoor (where I live half of the week in England)

What is your Daily must ?
sad to say; but my Blackberry!

What is a Monsieur with style for you ?
someone original who dares to mix colours and styles

What are the changes you've noticed in Menswear during the last years ?
In Paris I have noticed a proliferation of men’s shoe brands which is incredible compared to London or Milan.

What kind of clients do you have ?
We have a wide variety of clients from 18 year old who wears his slippers to go out night clubbing to older gentleman who wears his slippers in his chateau.

Your favorite Monsieur with style ?

What is the ultimate elegance for you? (not specially about clothes )
having time to enjoy life

The worst fashion faux-pas a man can do ?
Not necessarily fashion but good taste; white socks except for sports; too long sleaves on a jacket; also people who wear an expensive suit but wear inelegant shoes

Can you give us few tips on how to choose the right pair of socks to wear with different kind of shoes ? (Slippers , oxford ect...).
Depends on formality of the occasion, but there are two schools of though on the subject.
One says that socks should be same colour as trousers while others say that they should be same colour as shoes. I would say use colours!

One thing a man should try before dying ?

Obviously my slippers!

Your fashion must-have ?
I do not really follow fashion

Favorite brands ?
Wicket

What is the most unusual commission that you have ever been asked to undertake?

Picture of a client’s house to be embroidered on their slippers

GQ France wrote in his last issue (Sept) that slippers are made for home and should never go out do you agree ?

The writer has evidently not worn a pair of my slippers!

And to finish ,your advice to the Messieurs is?

Life is for living, live it !
